Pretty Permalinks in wordpress fails on windows hosting

Symptoms :

Pretty Permalinks in wordpress are not working even after setting correct Permalink Settings   [Applicable for windows server ] .

Pages with post / page names either getting 404 – Not found error or redirect to root of domain

Solution :

When you update these settings wordpress will ask you to update the web.config . Note that there is already a web.config.php file wordpress root folder . But this is not the file to update.

You need update web.config file if exists . If file does not exist then create a new file named web.config and add following code it it. It should resolve the issue .

<?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”UTF-8″?>
<configuration>
<system.webServer>
<rewrite>
<rules>
<rule name=”WordPress Rule 1″ stopProcessing=”true”>
<match url=”^index\.php$” ignoreCase=”false” />
<action type=”None” />
</rule>
<rule name=”WordPress Rule 2″ stopProcessing=”true”>
<match url=”^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?files/(.+)” ignoreCase=”false” />
<action type=”Rewrite” url=”wp-includes/ms-files.php?file={R:2}” appendQueryString=”false” />
</rule>
<rule name=”WordPress Rule 3″ stopProcessing=”true”>
<match url=”^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?wp-admin$” ignoreCase=”false” />
<action type=”Redirect” url=”{R:1}wp-admin/” redirectType=”Permanent” />
</rule>
<rule name=”WordPress Rule 4″ stopProcessing=”true”>
